Snoop Dogg was summoned to the Red Table after he insulted Gayle King. The rapper railed into Gayle for questioning Kobe Bryant’s legacy by her injecting his past case from 2003 where a 19 year old hotel employee at the time accused Kobe of rape. Many saw that 2003 case as a situation of the past. Why not allow the course of time to determine what Kobe’s legacy will be. Many were not as angry with Gayle that she asked the question, but for continuing to dig.
Snoop made his anger known to Gayle with what many deemed as a threat. We even viewed part of Snoop’s rant as a threat to Gayle. But, in threatening the progression of black women as Jada puts it…Come on. Approaching the situation at the Red Table, Jada said to Snoop:
I felt like not only were you talking to Gayle, but you were talking to me,” she said, adding that she felt he had taken power from women, including her mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones and daughter Willow Smith, both of whom were present at the talk.
“I was like, ’Not Snoop!’” Pinkett Smith said. “That was one of the reasons why I felt like I really wanted to have the conversation with you in the spirit of healing.”
Is Jada saying a black journalist should be able to do what she wants and not be harshly criticize for it by black people. Gayle is no different of a reporter than others and should be criticized accordingly. Kobe maintained that sexual interaction with the woman was consensual. Despite the woman filing a police report, she refused to testify, and the case was dropped against Kobe.
The woman later filed a civil lawsuit against Kobe. An out of court settlement was agreed on between Kobe’s attorneys and the woman’s legal team. Kobe later, allegedly as per the woman accusing him of rape requested that he made a public apology. Kobe selected to a written apology that was read by his attorney which said:
First, I want to apologize directly to the young woman involved in this incident. I want to apologize to her for my behavior that night and for the consequences she has suffered in the past year. Although this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally, I can only imagine the pain she has had to endure. I also want to apologize to her parents and family members, and to my family and friends and supporters, and to the citizens of Eagle, Colo.
I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman. No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case. Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.
I issue this statement today fully aware that while one part of this case ends today, another remains. I understand that the civil case against me will go forward. That part of this case will be decided by and between the parties directly involved in the incident and will no longer be a financial or emotional drain on the citizens of the state of Colorado.
And here is a snippet of Snoop and Jada speaking on him firing off his anger at Gayle, which Jada says affected her:
Do you think it’s fair game to press on Kobe’s past case in reference to his legacy, and was Jada’s approach right in what she said to Snoop ?
