YouTuber Jenna Marbles who boast a whopping 20 million followers on YouTube is leading us all to believe that she is shutting down her YouTube channel. The thought comes after the content creator received backlash for videos she posted years ago. In particular, social media has been railing into the content creator over a video she created some years ago where she mocks Nicki Minaj as blackface. This action has been checked as racist, and this is what is running Marbles off YouTube as she puts it. Marbles is known also for mocking asian people where in one video she calls them ching, chong-wong. Marbles feeling the heat to step off of YouTube said:
If thats the case where people will watch something and be offended now. I don’t want it to exist, so I’ve privated a lot of my old content. Because I just don’t want anyone to feel upset about anything. I don’t want to contribute to that. I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t want someone to watch something and feel hurt and offended now for any reason at all.
Marbles goes into speaking about people being upset that she did blackface as Nicki Minaj 2011. Marbles went on to apologizing for doing blackface, and added that she didn’t mean to offend anyone. The YouTube content creator went on ith more apologies saying she is also sorry for making videos about what girls do, and what guys do. Marbles emotional during said:
“I don’t know how long it’s going to be. I just want to make sure the things I’m putting in the world aren’t hurting anyone … so I need to be done with this channel, for now or for forever.”
Marbles says she is taking time away from making content, and is unsure if she will return. Maybe or maybe not she says. It’s wise of Marbles not to rush to quick judgement on whether she will leave YouTube for good or not. This would only give social media investigators reason to call her out as in-genuine and dishonest. Marbles is smart enough to realize you don’t just throw away a gold-mine of millions of followers. She built an empire on these followers, and she knows it. Question though, could Marbles be over-reacting in her response to “the backlash” over her old YouTube videos?
The last we remember- Marbles is not the only one to have done blackface. The Prime Minister of Canada came out apologizing for his days of doing blackface. Jimmy Fallon also came out apologizing for doing blackface as well. They all still have their jobs. Why would Marbles being singled out “so aggressively”?
Just doesn’t make sense in how what she is projecting. Marbles also apologized for doing Asians voices in her old videos. This makes me wonder…where do we go from here in humor in this world if we cannot even poke fun of others. The blackface is a different topic. But, are we so sensitive today that to listen someone poke fun of our accent that we get offended by this to the point of venting racism?
